SEASON

Summer

The wild edge of Iceland’s Hornstrandir Nature Reserve takes you on a hiking trip into one of the last true wilderness areas in Europe. There are no roads here. Just steep cliffs, deserted fjords, and trails that fade into tundra.

No roads. No crowds. Iceland’s last true wilderness.

You’ll be one of the few to hike between remote coves, sail beneath towering sea cliffs teeming with birdlife, roam ancient paths once used by Icelandic settlers, and explore a land where Arctic foxes outnumber people, all while living aboard a floating basecamp that adapts to the weather and the tides.

RAW &
UNTOUCHED

No corner of Iceland feels as raw and untouched as Hornstrandir. Towering cliffs guard its shores, thick fog drapes its mountains, and the trails – if they exist at all – are carved by foxes more than by feet. There are no roads, no villages, and no permanent residents. Just silence, wind, and the distant sound of seabirds echoing off the cliffs.

To explore this wild peninsula, we’ve teamed up with a highly experienced Icelandic sailboat built for the northern seas and its crew. This floating basecamp will be our home and lifeline through the fjords.
Out here, solitude isn’t a concept. It’s the default.

Hornstrandir isn’t just off the map—it’s off the grid. You won’t find trail markers here, just raw nature, unpredictable weather, and days of silence.

HIKING THE LOST FJORDS

Join a group of 8 adventurers along the wildest coast of Iceland. Over several days, we’ll sail between isolated fjords and hike through ancient sheep trails, fox tracks, and forgotten headlands. The land here is raw—lush with moss, carved by wind, and often soaked with mist. We’ll follow narrow footpaths along sea cliffs, cross rivers that run glass-clear from snowmelt, and stand in silence where the land ends and the Arctic begins.

After each long day out in the elements, we’ll return to the sailboat—our shelter, our base, our only link to the world beyond the fjords.

Over warm meals and strong coffee, stories are shared, gear is dried, and the kind of camaraderie that only comes from true remoteness begins to take root.

An incredible experience! From sailing through Arctic waters to hiking amidst majestic landscapes, and kayaking in serene fjords, every moment was filled with awe and wonder. The guides made the journey even more special, sharing their expertise and passion for Greenland.

Our guide Albert accompanied us on our kayak exploration trip in Greenland. He was a unifying guide, with excellent social skills and a good cook. A great guide and an even better person!

FLOATING BASECAMP

Welcome to Byr, a ketch rigged, highly seaworthy expedition charter boat built in the Netherlands in 1993. Sailing a traditional rigging like this gives you the authentic feeling of hauling up sails manually, together with your crew mates. The professional crew led by captains Siggi & Annukka ensures Byr is sailed safely, no matter your experience level.

The boat features a saloon where we can relax after a long day of playing outdoors, sharing our experiences and a fantastic dinner made of local ingredients. It is also a great place for sharing photos, stories or simply curling up in the corner of the soft couch to read a good book from the collection of Arctic & Antarctic expedition books.

Itinerary

1
Day 1: Welcome to Iceland

Your guides will meet you at Amarok Adventures’ basecamp in Reykjavík in the afternoon for a trip briefing and a chance to meet your fellow adventurers. Afterward, we’ll head to the domestic airport for a short flight to Ísafjörður, where Byr will be safely anchored and waiting. There, you’ll meet the crew, settle into the boat, and go over safety procedures with your guides. We’ll share our first dinner together onboard and review the plan for the days ahead.

If weather conditions ground the flight, we’ll travel to Ísafjörður by vehicle instead.

2
Days 2 to 7: Traverse Hornstrandir’s wild coastline by boat and boot

Over the coming days, we’ll dive deep into the wild heart of Hornstrandir; sailing its raw coastline and hiking through untouched wilderness. There’s no fixed route here; our path will bend to whatever the weather, wind, and tides throw at us. Every evening, we’ll gather in the saloon to chart the best course for the next day. Our goal? To spend as much time as possible exploring on foot. Plus, we’ll have expedition kayaks ready to launch from the boat, letting you paddle into hidden coves and quiet bays. Some days, kayaking will take center stage, giving you the chance to experience Hornstrandir from the water’s edge.

We will arrive back to Ísafjörður the night of Day 7 and we will head for a last dinner all together at a local restaurant.

3
Day 8: Return to Reykjavík

After breakfast on our last day, we’ll head to Ísafjörður airport & leave to Reykjavík in the morning with a domestic flight.
Once in Reykjavík, you can choose to carry on your adventure or return home.

We recommend allowing at least one day in Reykjavík before your next departure.
