Mt. Asgard & Mt. Thor: Arctic Icons Along the Akshayuk Pass Trail

As you traverse Akshayuk Pass, you’ll encounter some of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in the Arctic, including the legendary Mt. Asgard and Mt. Thor.

Mt. Asgard, with its distinctive twin cylindrical summits, is one of the most recognizable peaks in Baffin Island. Rising to 2,015 meters (6,611 feet), its sheer vertical walls have made it a sought-after challenge for mountain climbers. The mountain also holds a unique place in pop culture, famously featured in a James Bond film, “The Spy Who Loved Me,” where stuntman Rick Sylvester, double as James Bond, famously skied off the mountain with a Union Jack parachute.

While hikers won’t be climbing Mt Asgard’s imposing rock face, its presence dominates the skyline, offering incredible photo opportunities along the trail.

Further south along the Akshayuk Pass Trail, Mt. Thor boasts the world’s tallest vertical drop—a staggering 1,250 meters (4,101 feet)of sheer rock face. This peak is a favorite among extreme climbers, but for trekkers, simply standing in its shadow is an unforgettable experience. The view of Mt. Thor against the vast Arctic landscape is a highlight of the Akshayuk Pass Trail and a must-see if you plan to venture deep into the Auyuittuq National Park.

After crossing Akshayuk Pass, hikers descend into the Weasel River Valley, where they can marvel at the rugged beauty of the Arctic wilderness. This section of the trail provides opportunities for wildlife sightings and offers a glimpse into the diverse ecosystems of Auyuittuq National Park.

The route takes hikers through a series of valleys and mountain passes, including the ascent to Summit Lake. This section of the trail presents challenges such as steep ascents and descents, rocky terrain, and potential river crossings.

Here’s a detailed look at the essential equipment you’ll need:

  2. Layered Clothing: Baffin Island’s weather can be unpredictable, with temperature fluctuations and sudden changes in conditions. Dressing in layers allows you to adjust to varying temperatures throughout the day. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer & add insulating layers for warmth. Top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer shell to protect against rain and snow.
  3. Backpack: Choose a comfortable and durable backpack with enough capacity to carry all your gear, food, and water. Look for features like padded shoulder straps, a supportive waist belt, and multiple compartments for organization.
  4. Navigation Tools: While the trail is well-marked in most sections, it’s essential to carry navigation tools such as a map, compass, or GPS device to ensure you stay on course, especially in areas where the trail may be less defined.
  5. Food and Water: Pack lightweight, high-energy snacks and meals that are easy to prepare. These meals should provide sustained energy for long days of hiking. Bring plenty of water or a water filtration system to replenish your supply from natural sources along the trail.
  6. First Aid Kit: Prepare a comprehensive first aid kit that includes essential supplies.
  7. Emergency Shelter and Fire-starting Tools: Be prepared for unexpected situations. Additionally, carry a lightweight emergency shelter, such as a bivy sack or space blanket.
