FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
What to bring?
- Good hiking shoes
- Warm clothing and wind and waterproof outerwear
- Hiking poles are recommended
- Food & water for the day
Is always possible to hike to the volcano?
No. That’s why the ICE-SAR teams are always measuring & controlling the area. Depending on the weather conditions, the rescue team can close the access and it wouldn’t be possible to access the eruption site. Gas pollution is not visible and cannot be detected by scent. Gas can disperse from the smoke cloud and pollution can increase rapidly in an area. If you feel any discomfort leave the area immediately.
How difficult is the trail?
People in pretty good shape need 3-4 hours to walk the trail (return trip) from the starting point by the road. Hiking poles recommended for support, quite steep slopes are on the hiking path. There is a marked trail with challenging terrain over lava fields, gravel and uneven ground. The elevation gain is approximately 250 m, up steep hills.
